Update, at 2:30 pm on Sunday, the Coast Guard is working with the owners of F/V Bald Eagle II and coordinating with state and local partners to mitigate the environmental impact of a trawler after it ran aground on the south coast on Tuesday.

Moran Environmental Recovery has signed a contract with the shipowner to promote the removal of hazardous materials.

At present, 6,500 gallons of diesel and 1,000 gallons of oil-water mixture have been removed from the ship. Most of the fuel on the ship has been recovered, and the focus has been shifted to finding the remaining oil and water in the fuel tank.

It is expected that all oils and hazardous substances will be removed today.

After the product in the fuel tank is recovered, the operation will shift to towing the boat off the beach.

A tug from Charleston, South Carolina is currently on its way. The owner has planned to tow the ship to Hampton, Virginia for repairs.

The town of South Coast requires bystanders to give staff enough space to work safely.

The F/V Bald Eagle II first encountered an engine failure at around 7:30 on Tuesday morning, and then a net caught the propeller. The crew broke down but could not prevent the ship from reaching the shoreline near Dogwood Avenue.

The four crew members of the ship ran aground in the outer sandbar and were airlifted to safety by the Coast Guard.

The boat drifted south to near Dolphin Run and then stopped at noon near Trout Run near the "Y" intersection of NC 12 and Ocean Trail, where it has been there ever since.

A salvage team and another trawler, Capt. Malc, tried to re-float the ship at high tide overnight, but the tow rope broke and their efforts were in vain.

Jennifer Thompson (Jennifer Thompson) sent us a video on Friday morning in which a trawler was sitting on the keel in the beating waves.

Thompson said she spoke with someone at the company that owns Bald Eagle II, who said that the Coast Guard had asked them to release the ship before this afternoon before they could intervene.

Barbara Ann Bell, the administrator of the OBX Sunrise page on Facebook, took a video of the Bald Eagle II on Thursday morning. Its bow is now facing the beach, and a line on the boat is connected to the excavator. .

A video taken by Kristine Kiousis on Tuesday showed that a Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter from Elizabeth City station rescued a rescue swimmer and a crew member from the F/V Bald Eagle II from the waves.

The grounding occurred a week after a trawler was grounded near Frisco, when F/V Jonathan Ryan lost power after being entangled with a net and its propeller last Monday morning.

In the late afternoon, F/V Jonathan Ryan was successfully dragged back into the sea.
