Woodbridge windsurfer achieves his dream by working and surfing with the hero he posted on the bedroom wall when he was a child.

Darren Herbert, born in London, has had a very rich career since escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.

During the coronavirus pandemic, he taught people to surf in Australia, navigate the waves of Hawaii, and even drive an ambulance.

Now running his own company, helping men and women who are losing hair, one thing will always remain in his mind-the sea.

The 37-year-old learned windsurfing through his father when he was young and traveled the world-flipping, spinning and cycling on the high waves of some of the best beaches on earth.

Now, he often keeps in touch with his childhood heroes in the sport-Robbie Nash and Francisco Goya-and even surfs for their company. He is also a member of the local team Kachina.

Mr. Herbert said: "I just like windsurfing, or any real surfboarding."

"When I'm not at the beach, I feel uncomfortable.

"I grew up in a dangerous period in London, and gang members lived on our way, trying to recruit young people.

"My parents will take me to St. Osyth on the weekend to get rid of all this.

"I remember my friends and I were sitting on our bikes looking at windsurfers and thinking:'Wow, I want to be like them.'"

The boy at the time quickly became a well-known local figure, then moved to Australia to teach tourists the sport and left his mark on the larger stage.

But the world of competitions and the transition to pros never caught his attention.

"I was never really interested in the game," he said. "I just like surfing.

"I have to understand my childhood heroes—the people who had their pictures on the walls of my bedroom when I was a kid. It's a great feeling.

"They asked me to go to places like Hawaii to test our new product. This is great."

Mr. Herbert added that this sport has great benefits for his mental health, and he always pays close attention to the weather forecast in order to ride the wind and waves.

"If you are creating a wish list, these sports should definitely be there-it's really an amazing experience," he added.
