The Whanganui surf patrol started this weekend at Whanganui Beach, but a lifeguard has completed his first rescue.

Phoenix Grammaticogiannis rescued two bodyboarders who had a breach in Castlecliff Beach after police learned they were in trouble.

Matthew Newell, administrator of the Wanganui Surf Life Saving Club, said that Grammaticogiannis happened to be nearby when he received a call last month and swam out to rescue the couple.

"Phoenix is a very strong swimmer, he can drag them into the water through the rope attached to the board," Newell said.

"We received a call from the police and were on our way, but Phoenix was there and acted quickly. Fortunately, they stayed calm and stayed on their surfboards because when the swimmer got into the rift and pulled the rescuer down , They will panic."

Newell said he also thanked the public for calling the police when they noticed that boarders were in trouble.

The Whanganui Surf Lifeguard Patrol will start at Castlecliff and Kai Iwi Beach on Saturday and will last from noon to 6 pm every day until January 30.

"Lifeguards will be on duty on Christmas and New Year's Day, and we ask beach visitors to help them by swimming between the flags and following good water safety measures," Newell said.

He said it is timely to remind swimmers of offshore currents.

"If you fall into an offshore stream, relax and float, raise your hand to signal for help, and walk along the offshore stream until it stops, and you can swim back to the shore safely."

"If in doubt, stay outside and seek advice from a lifeguard, as the situation may change regularly."

Newell said that it is important to always pay close attention to young children in or near the water and always keep them within reach.
