Narosa School of Surf will promote summer kids camps running weekly Monday-Friday every week in July and August
North-West Donegal-based Narosa School of Surf has reopened the doors of their newly refurbished surf shop and coffee bar premises at the pier in Magheraroarty running daily surf lessons and kids camps at the beach.
The surf school founded by Lee Wood and business partner Duncan Halliday in 2009, began as a grassroots set-up of two in Dunfanaghy, offering tuition at a time when surfing was yet to be established as a mainstream activity in Ireland.
Thirteen years on, the business is a hive of activity with a growing team of 30 staff, expanding in 2021 to bring surfing to more people by opening its second bricks and mortar premises in Magheraroarty.

Director Lee Wood shared: “When we first opened the surf school in Dunfanaghy, we would literally go door to door offering lessons to anyone who was willing! We’re so excited to be heading into our second summer season in Magheraroarty, and keep on sharing our love of surf with as many folks as possible.”
Narosa Magheraroarty’s positioning with the Donegal Gaeltacht brings a renewed focus for the brand, as the Irish language is integrated into signage, marketing and retail. Irish speaking staff head up the team in Magheraroarty to ensure that communications can be had in both Irish and English.
Dunfanaghy remains firmly open as the flagship Narosa shop with accommodation, in its prime location in the former AIB Bank on the main street.
There’s a vibrancy about the place that comes from an energetic team, that’s shared with customers new and longstanding. At the core of the business Lee Wood leads a simple vision of a love for the ocean and a desire to share it with as many people as possible.
This vibe has spilled into the newly opened Magheraroarty shop, and both locations achieve the effortless appeal of being places that you simply want to spend time in.
Beautiful design underpins the Narosa brand throughout, as all visuals are produced in-house by designer Jude Wood. As well as surf equipment, swimwear, and wetsuits, Narosa offers a full apparel collection in both its shops for kids and adults, like organic cotton sweatshirts, dresses and t-shirts featuring original hand-drawn graphics by Jude.
Creating and executing a beautiful design that had longevity was absolutely key in the opening of Narosa Magheraroarty.
“From the moment we were introduced to the building by Udaras na Gaeltachta, we knew there was potential to build something really special there” explains Lee.
Overlooking a perfect point break, and framed by the Atlantic Ocean and Muckish mountain the backdrop truly is spectacular.
“It was a whirlwind project for us last year as we went from concept to completion on a full shop fit-out in six weeks. It wasn’t a simple process, but we worked with our good friend and master carpenter Philippe Hetier Bespoke Furniture, to bring the vision to life”.
Philippe Hetier is well-known to Narosa as along with Lee Wood, he masterminded the wooden surfboard brand Tonn, the first of its kind to design and shape in Ireland.
This love of surf and surfboards runs subtly through the shop design, as waves are carved into timber cladding, and honeycomb structures [the core design element of Tonn surfboards]are evident in frames and detailing.
Proximity to fantastic waves was the clincher when it came to opening Narosa Magheraroarty, and the team of highly experienced surf coaches teaches surf lessons and kids camp throughout the week at the beach located a five-minute walk away.
“Surf setups don’t come much better than this” explains director Duncan Halliday.
“We have a perfect beginner beach with progressive waves alongside a left-hand point break for more experienced surfers, all within a five-minute walk of our shop.

"If that wasn’t sweet enough, you can stroll back to the shop and warm up afterward with a coffee and pastry in our coffee bar”.
A passion for specialty coffee and good food is another part of Narosa that seems to go hand in hand with surfing and is a key part of the setup in Magheraroarty.
A passion for quality is evident when Lee tells us “We simply want to do everything we do to the very best of our ability. Whether that’s making a cup of coffee, designing a hoodie, or teaching a surf lesson we want customers to leave Narosa feeling like they’ve experienced something special”.
Narosa Magheraroarty surf shop and coffee bar is open now and taking bookings for both adult surf lessons, kids lessons, and camps. Narosa HQ in Dunfanaghy offers the same service as on-site accommodation.
