A surfboard covered in black-ink tributes has been erected on a beach in memoriam of late surfing legend Chris Davidson.

Mr Davidson, 45, was killed in an alleged one punch attack outside the South West Rocks Country Club just after 11pm on Saturday.

The former professional athlete's death has left the surfing world in mourning and rocked the tightknit NSW Mid-North Coast community as local footballer Grant Coleman, 42, faces charges over the alleged fatal assault.

Now, members of the community have created a memorial for the surfing star on a local beach, inserting a wooden stake with a sign attached to the top reading:' RIP Chris Davidson, 1976- 2022'.

At the bottom, his nickname 'Davo' is scrawled across the plastic board, with a photo printed in the centre showing him laying on a surfboard in the water, putting up two fingers to form a peace sign.

Just behind the sign sits a surfboard propped against the back of a public bench with the silhouette of a curvaceous woman stenciled down the middle.

On the fibreglass, messages are scrawled across the surface, while a bouquet of yellow flowers lays at its base.

'In loving memory of Chris Davidson,' one message reads, while another simply says 'Rest In Peace.'

'Keeping shredding in heaven Davo,' someone else wrote.

'Love and miss you forever'.

Alongside the messages, an image shows a woman wearing a cowboy hat and boots, standing with her legs astride and hands on her hips.

The board also features an embossed sun and a hand-drawn Aboriginal flag.

The commemoration comes after Coleman, the younger brother of NSW Waratahs coach Darren Coleman, faced a court hearing at Kempsey Local Court on Monday, where no bail application was made and it was formally refused.

Police allege Mr Davidson was punched to the face outside the venue, fell to the ground and hit his head on the pavement.

Grant Coleman (pictured) has been charged in relation to Mr Davidson's death. He is pictured drinking

Coleman was arrested about half an hour after the alleged assault at a South West Rocks home and charged with assault causing death. He was later hit with another charge of choking the alleged victim.

Coleman was excused from appearing in person or via video link in court on Monday, with his lawyer James Janke representing him at the hearing, the Illawarra Mercury reports.

Court documents show Coleman allegedly 'intentionally choked Chris Davidson' between 9pm and 11.05pm, before allegedly assaulting him sometime between 11pm and 11.05pm.

Magistrate Scott Nash has ordered a brief to be served by November 21.

Coleman, who is behind bars at Silverwater Correctional Complex, in Western Sydney, is next due to front Kempsey Local Court on November 23.
